CORRALEJO DUNES
With a total surface area of 2,600 hectares, 2.5 kilometers wide and 10 long, this enormous field of dunes runs parallel to the northeast coast of the island of Fuerteventura, in the municipality of La Oliva. In 1994 it was recognized as "Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park". We observe a blanket of white sand, with the typical Canarian badlands, the ocher and yellow volcanic soil born more than 50,000 years ago with the eruption of the numerous volcanoes that we find in the area.
Within the natural park we can find long and extensive beaches with turquoise waters and clear sand where you can enjoy good baths throughout the year. Especially visited are the beaches of Corralejo that reach up to 9 kilometers long. In them we can practice water sports such as surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing with the Isla de Lobos watching us from the other side of the sea.
You will arrive at the Dunes from Corralejo along the FV-1A road that crosses the entire Corralejo Dunes Park from north to south. They are extensive amounts of sand that can reach 50 meters above sea level, countless cars stop by the side of the road to take their photos with the image of the yellowish desert, turquoise water and blue sky.
This place of incalculable natural and landscape value is one of the parks that you must visit when you are in Fuerteventura. Habitat for numerous plant and animal species, most of them endemic. Among them you can see the jonquils, the honeydew, the sea thorns, etc. The marine fauna is very extensive and the seabirds, small reptiles and invertebrates stand out. If you are lucky you will be able to see the native fauna that is on the island; majorera goats, rabbits even some squirrel.
To the south of the dune park we can see the occasional solidified basalt flow that at some point was lava derived from the red mountain that rises to an altitude of 312 meters, where the most daring have an ascent to the top from where they can see excellent views of the area and the Isla de Lobos.
